Thailand
Mali is 55 years old and live in the Surin province of Thailand with her two children. She is a widow who farms jasmine rice and weaves silk cloth to provide for family. Both her children are now adults and work as manual labourers in the village.
Mali began weaving silk cloth more than 30 years ago. She first started weaving when she finished school and wanted to establish a career for herself. She applied everything she knew about weaving and quickly became well known in her village for producing high quality fabric. Although she primarily sells silk cloth to retail shops in her local area, she also sells her silk products in the local public markets.
Up to now, the weaving business has been enough to provide for her family, particularly when her children were younger. Like many other small business owners, Mali is driven to continue growing her income to provide a better life for her family. She has therefore decided to apply for a loan which she will use to purchase silk weaving materials, including silk tread, colour dyes and a brand-new handloom.
