Mrs. Vanna is a 36 year old married woman with two children, aged 15 and 11, both of whom attend the local school. The family live in the Sangke District of Battambang Province where she and her husband farm dry season rice each year for sale to provide the income for the family.
Mrs. Vanna and her husband have been farming rice for a number of years. They have their own paddy field on which they grow short term rice which is three hectares in size and from which they get a harvest of four tons of rice per hectare. The crops are then sold to a local middle man who buys direct from their farm. In order to expand their farming activity, they also rent a further four hectares of paddy field land from another villager at a cost of $200 (£174.91) per hectare. With their dedication to the expansion and development of their farming activities she had an earlier loan from Lendwithcare which was used to purchase their own walking tractor (with the goal of reducing annual rental costs). She has now requested this 24 month loan to purchase good quality seed, fertiliser, pesticide and weed-killer, along with covering ploughing, threshing and land-rental costs.
