Mr. Savin is a 58 year old and married man with one 22 year old son. The family live in the Kamrieng District of Battambang Province where he and his wife farm cassava for sale each year to provide the family income.
Mr. Savin has been a farmer for many years, growing cassava on his plot of land which is 15 hectares in size and from which he gets a crop of 10 tons of cassava per hectare, which is then sold to a local middle-man. As part of his farming activity he employs 15 local villagers to help him with the planting and the chopping of the cassava root and pays them each the standard rate of $5 (£4.34) per day for their labours. Due to the recent economic situation his cash-flow is tight at present so he has requested this 36 month loan which will be used to purchase fertiliser, pesticide and weed-killer along with paying planting and harvesting costs.
