Ecuador
Gina Yasmin is a smallholder farmer from near the small town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. Her husband works in the mines. They have a young son who attends a local school.
Gina keeps hens and pigs and also grows maize and sugarcane. She began farming about 6 years ago after she married. She now has 4 pigs and some 50 hens, and plants about one hectare of maize each year. Gina and her husband have their own plot of land and home now. She requested a loan to buy materials, and take on and pay 4 labourers to build a new pig shelter and plant maize. The total cost of the labour is $2,000, while the remaining $1,000 is for materials. The loan will be repaid over 6 quarterly instalments.
