Ampila is 68 years old and lives with her husband Rogelio. The couple have three adult children who are now living independently with their own families. Both Ampila and Rogelio are still hard workers – to earn an income they work on their farm, spend time raising hogs and Rogelio works as a carpenter.
Ampila has been raising hogs for 13 years. This is now one of the main sources of income for the family, as Rogelio has dialled back his carpentry work. Currently Ampila has a total of 12 hogs and three are ready to be sold. Part of her earnings from selling the hogs has to be re-invested in caring for the animals, so she purchases feed and medicines to keep them healthy. On a weekly basis, Ampila usually purchases 3-4 sacks of feed. Although Ampila focuses on keeping her hogs healthy, she can still experience difficulties, mainly having the working capital available to purchase feed in bulk.
To invest in her hog raising business, Ampila has requested a loan which she will use to purchase feed and medicines in larger quantities. She is a hard-working businesswoman and is confident that the investment will help to improve her business.
