Zambia
Residing in the Katete district of Eastern Zambia, the women of Umodzi 0501(Oneness) group have managed to grow their small businesses as a result of the loan support they receive from Lendwithcare’s local partner, the Microloan Foundation Zambia. The members are between twenty-nine and forty-five years old. The women’s biggest motivation for these women to run their small businesses is to look after their forty-five dependents in their households.
The enterprises these women run are agricultural shops, second-hand clothing and take away restaurants.
Janet is a member of the Umodzi 0501(Oneness) group. She is happy to share her success in her agricultural stall. Janet started her shop seven years ago after she resigned from being a secretary at a company in her area. Currently her shop has expanded and she sells fertilizers, seeds, medicines to aid crop production and mealie meal. With the help of her husband who is a carpenter, Janet is a successful businesswoman and this is seen from the investments she has made. With her previous loans, Janet expanded her stall. The profits from her stall has helped her to build a house and buy a vehicle that her business and family uses. Janet is grateful to the lenders for the loan she and her group members receives. The members of this group have successfully repaid their first loan and are now requesting their second loan to invest in their small businesses.
The Microloan Foundation in Zambia lend to female entrepreneurs using the ‘centre’ model. A centre is typically made up of 3-4 sub-groups and these sub-groups almost always have five members. Each centre has its own name and the sub-groups within the centre share the same name. Each person within the group of five women is responsible for repaying her loan but the members support each other and if a member is unable to repay her loan on time, then the group assumes responsibility for repayment. Loan officers provide training to the groups, although it is expected that centre leaders will eventually assume responsibility for providing some of the basic training.
