Fidele Mbonabucya is a 37 year old farmer and his wife helps him in this work in which they cultivate different crops, mostly Irish Potatoes. Fidele and his wife have 3 children who attend the local primary school. His choice of potato farming has been guided by the type of soil fertility in the Ngororero District where they live.
Fidele with his wife are potato farmers. He works hard in this business and also currently employs 10 temporary workers to assist in the tasks on the farm. He started the potato business 17 years ago after analyzing that it had the potential to generate a good income. He currently generates around 260000Frw (£185) per month after covering household expenditures. He aims to achieve improvements to his potato farming activity which is why he decided to request a second loan to invest in potato farming inputs. With this loan he will buy 2500 kilos of potato seeds at 200Frw (£0.14) each kilo, 1167 kilo of fertilizer at 600Frw (£0.42) each kilo and the remaining balance will be invested in composites, and pay labour costs. He currently produces around 5 tons of potato each growing season but with this loan he is expecting to increase his production to 8 tons each growing season and his net income will increase to 300000Frw (£213) per month. The first loan which he successfully repaid helped him to expand his potato production up to 5 tons. He also raises 2 cows that provide milk for his family and organic fertilizers for his farm land. He promised to repay back the loan within 6 months without difficulties.
