Elsa Lapo is 71 and lives with her husband near the small town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. They have eight adult children who have all left home and live and work in other towns. Her husband has a smallholding.
Doña Elsa is a seamstress. She has a workshop at home and makes made to measure clothing, offers repairs and alterations, and also makes covers for household furniture. Her business has been greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic as she had contracts with schools and colleges to makes PE outfits and school wear. Instead she has focused in making face masks and protective equipment. She has been working as a seamstress since she was 15 and helped her mother who had the same business. Elsa started working in a fabric workshop after she married to supplement the household income. She then started her own business from rented premises working with two sewing machines. Now she works from a workshop at home. Elsa makes a monthly profit of around $330. She requested a loan to buy fabric to make PPE and also pay for maintenance of her machines.
