Mrs. Phandy Heak is a 47 year old widow with four children ranging in age from 27 to 10. The older two children now have their own jobs while the younger two still attend school. The family live in the Phnom Srok District of Banteaymeanchey Province where she farms both rice and cassava each year as a source of income for the family.
Mrs. Phandy Heak has been a farmer for over 20 years farming wet season rice on a plot of land 1.5 hectares in size from which she harvests 3 tons of rice for sale through a local merchant. In addition, she also has a separate plot of land, also 1.5 hectares in size, which is used for growing cassava and from which she gets a crop of 10 tons of cassava root. She hires five local villagers on a temporary seasonal basis, paying them each $5 (£3.68) per day for their labour in assisting with cutting and chopping the cassava and preparing it for sale through the local middle-man. In order to increase her income, she now wants to expand her cassava farm and so has applied for a 36 month loan which will be used for purchasing an additional half-hectare of land for growing cassava.
