Pakistan
The Pak Salum Group consists of 8 smallholder farmers living in the district of Kasur in northeastern Pakistan, near the border with India. The group members are all men aged between 20 and 36. They all grow wheat in the winter and rice in the summer and keep water buffaloes for milk. In total there are 17 children in their households out of whom ten are in school. Four of the members are not yet married.
One of the group members is Riaz Hussain. He is 35 and married with one son and two daughters, two of his children are old enough to attend school. Riaz Sahib owns five acres of land. On average he estimates that he earns around £1,350 profit per year in total. He struggles to make ends meet and is exploring ways how he might earn more. Riaz Sahib and his group have decided to come together to request a loan to purchase a tractor. They hope this will enable them to increase efficiency and productivity. Currently, they have to rent a tractor when they require assistance with ploughing and harvesting and tractors are not always available when they require them and this can also result in lower yields. They also hope to rent out the tractor themselves to generate additional income. If you are lending, please be aware that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic your repayments could be at greater risk of delay or default.
