Cambodia
Mrs. Un Yann is a 59 year old widow with one son who is aged 20 and works as a construction worker. She lives in the Mongkol Borey District of Banteaymeanchey Province where she farms wet season rice for sale as the main source of income for the family.
Mrs. Un Yann has been a farmer for the last 30 years, farming wet season rice on her paddy field which is three hectares in size. From this field she harvests 3 tons of rice per hectare which is then sold to a local middle man who purchases direct from her farm. In order to increase the family income further, ten years ago she started raising cows at her home and currently has three cows. As a family the primary limitation to income at present is the inability of her son to travel very far to his place of work as a construction worker. With this in mind she has requested this 18 month loan in order to purchase a motorcycle so that her son can travel wherever the work requires and therefore have more continuous work.
The number of COVID cases in Cambodia has remained relatively low since the global outbreak of coronavirus in March 2020. Nonetheless, low-income entrepreneurs in Cambodia, particularly smallholder farmers, have been negatively impacted by border closures and restricted market access and are now seeking much needed finance to help rebuild their income-generating activities.
