Suriya Bibi is 50 years old and lives in Kasur with her husband and four children. Her husband is working hard to bring in around £78 a month to support the family. Currently, only one of Suriya’s children is studying, the other three have very basic educations and are either waiting to continue their studies or start working.
Suriya Bibi is a skilled embroider specialising in the traditional Pakistani technique, Silma Sitara. Suriya works from home, which means she has a good work-life balance and complete housework during the day too
Suriya takes great pride in her work, and particularly enjoys adding her own signature touches to designs which are often received very well from her clients. Her business is only small, but she is pleased to be able to contribute £40 per month to the family income.
For a while now, Suriya has been thinking about her ultimate goal of improving the quality of what she produces. She hopes that this will ensure that she can charge more for the embroidery work, providing her with a better income. She has therefore requested a loan so that she can invest in better quality fabrics and sequins.
