Ecuador
Julia Quinche lives on the outskirts of the city of Loja in southern Ecuador. She is single and has no children.
Doña Julia cooks flour 'empanadas' or pasties, 'salchipapas' or sausages and chips, hamburgers, plantain empanadas, 'bolon de verde' or plantain dumplings, and also hot chocolate and coffee. She often cooks for birthdays, weddings and parties. Before becoming self-employed she worked in a fast food takeaway for around 7 years. It was there that she gained a lot of experience in cooking and the retail food sector. In 2017 she requested a loan from our local partner organisation Fundacion FACES to set up her own business which has become quite successful. Doña Julia has been able to buy and vehicle and makes deliveries - this has been a real asset during the coronavirus pandemic. On average she makes a profit of around $710 per month. Doña Julia requested a loan to buy a refrigerator costing $700, a coffee maker for $200 and the rest of the loan is to bulk buy rice, sugar, flour, and other ingredients. If you are lending, please be aware that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic your repayments could be at greater risk of delay or default.
