Ecuador
Anabel Patiño is 20 years old and lives in the outskirts of the city of Loja in southern Ecuador. Her son is aged 2 and when Anabel is working, he is cared for by his grandmother. There are times though when she has to take him to work as she has no other child care options available.
Anabel is a vegetable and herb farmer. Among the crops she grows are lettuces, lemon grass, onions, lemon verbena, chives, parsley and coriander. She harvests and sells herself at the markets in Loja. Sometimes she even sells as a street hawker. She learned farming from helping her mother when she was younger. Anabel started her own business when she became pregnant and needed to support herself and her child. Her mother provided her with a plot of land and she also raises chickens. Anabel is also studying to become an agronomist at university. She also sells seeds to other farmers where she lives. Anabel feels proud to have been able to support her child and to resume her studies, which she left because of her pregnancy. Now, she is making arrangements move and live separately with her son with support from her parents. On average, she makes a profit of around $550 per month on average. Anabel requested a loan to buy compost, seeds, other inputs and help for ploughing and preparing her land.
