Ecuador
Tania Salazar is 25 and has a 7 year old son with her partner. She lives in a rural community called El Tingo in southern Ecuador. Tania and her partner are smallholder farmers.
Tania mostly keeps chickens and pigs. She sells the chickens when they reach a weight of around 5 pounds. Any eggs are used for household consumption. The pigs are sold when they reach a weight of around 100 pounds. The couple also grow maize on around two hectares of land. Part of the harvest is kept for the animals and the rest is sold in a town called Cariamanga. Tania started farming independently some 7 years ago. She began with 20 chickens and then bought 2 piglets. At present she has 80 chickens and 6 piglets. She has made some investments in building a large chicken coop and a pig shelter for the animals. She estimates that they can earn a profit of around $5,000 per year on average.
Tania requested a loan to buy 15 sacks of animal feed for $30 each, a similar amount is for fertiliser, and the rest is to buy seeds, finalise some repairs and buy other inputs to plant maize. If you are lending, please be aware that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic your repayments could be at greater risk of delay or default
