Sambath Soeurn is 25 years old and lives in the Bovel District of Battambang Province with his wife. Although the couple don’t have children yet, they look forward to starting their family soon.
For the last three years, Sambath has been farming wet season rice with his wife on a rice paddy owned by them roughly one hectare in size. The couple enjoy the work, and are pleased that they can usually grow 2.5 tons of rice to sell from their plot of land.
In order to increase their income, they have recently started renting a second plot of land measuring roughly two hectares in size. This has helped them to farm more wet season rice, but it comes at a cost as they need to be pay $150 per hectare once a year to the landowner.
So they can continue farming at the same level as previous years, Sambath has requested a loan so they can invest in fertlizers and crop protection products, as well as having capital available to cover ploughing and harvesting costs. Furthermore, part of the loan will be used to purchase a plot of land to grow wet season rice and reduce the cost that they need to pay currently to the landowner.
Please note that Sambath has agreed to make a loan repayment every six months for 24 months. If you are lending, please be aware that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic your repayments could be at greater risk of delay or default.
