Jonel Ministerio is 31 years old, a farmer who lives in the village called Tag-bao in Cebu province. He has been living with his partner called Nezel and they have one child age 4 years old. Jonel did not finish college and when he started his own family six years ago he decided to focus in farming for him to earn income to deal with their needs. He previously worked for two years in Cebu city and used his salary to look after his family while he started up his farming business.
Jonel's parents shared a land about half a hectare so he could farm on his own. He currently grows chili pepper, spring onions, sweetcorn and locally known flowers like golden yellow and puto-puto. He did not allow us to take photos of above mention crops for he believed that it will be destroyed.
His house is found on top of the mountain and his farmland are on the hills. Shown in the photos are his other crops like malabar and chinese spinach. He is clearing the area near the plots for he will grow another cropping of sweetcorn in that area. End of this month he expect to harvest up to 800 kilos of sweetcorn and hoping the price will be 25 pesos (around £0.38) per kilo. He is also currently harvesting 10 to 25 kilos of his chili peppers every 15 days. All of his harvested crops are directly sold to traders who visits their village. He currently employ one temporary worker who work on cleaning the area and soon plant sweetcorn seeds. He pay him 300 pesos (about £4.55) a day with free lunch.
Jonel requested his second loan from the MFI-Lamac in order to access more working capital to finance his farming expenses. He will use the loan to buy additional bulk of fertilizes, plant vitamins and medicines to protect both his vegetables and flowers. These farm inputs will help ensure quality harvest. He also set aside funds to pay his worker and other needs in the farm. Jonel hopes to increase his production so he could earn more income and finish the house he is building for his family.
