Zambia
The Kanono group is comprised of 5 women members who run small businesses including charcoal, poultry, grocery stalls, market stalls selling fish, clothes and maize. The women are all married aged 47 to 55 years and resides in the Kasama Northern Zambia. They started the businesses to create self-employment and provide for their families. This will be their second loan with Microloan Foundation. Between them the members have 20 children and orphans that they care for.
One member Anneta Namambi, 47, married with five children and two orphans who depend on her and go to school. Anneta has a chicken run at her house, she started her business 4 years ago and her family members help her.
The Microloan Foundation in Zambia lend to female entrepreneurs using the ‘centre’ model. A centre is typically made up of 3-4 sub-groups and these sub-groups almost always have five members. Each centre has its own name and the sub-groups within the centre share the same name. Each person within the group of five women is responsible for repaying her loan but the members support each other and if a member is unable to repay her loan on time, then the group assumes responsibility for repayment. Loan officers provide training to the groups, although it is expected that centre leaders will eventually assume responsibility for providing some of the basic training.
Please note that Zambia is currently experiencing acute food insecurity and water shortages due to the worst drought the country has experienced in nearly 40 years. At this time there is an additional risk that some of the loans from Zambia might be delayed or defaulted. You can find more information here.
