Reynaldo Basalo is 53 years old and has three daughters aged 17, 19 and 21. The family lives in Cebu province. For the past 12 years and along with his 43 year old wife, Angela, Reynaldo has been growing cassava on a small plot of land near their house. The cassava is sold to wholesalers and is used in making various kinds of local dishes and baked goods. Reynaldo has been an active member of the microfinance organization Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative for the past 2 years and has already completed 3 loan cycles. He is now requesting a new loan of $1103 (42,000 Philippine pesos) to purchase additional fertilisers and farming equipment. He has promised to repay this over an eighteen month period.
