Mrs. Bui Thi Khuyen is 52 years old woman living in Lac Son, a rural district in northwest Vietnam, with her husband and son. Her son is married, has a family of his own and lives separately with his family.
Mrs. Bui Thi Khuyen and her husband make a living by running a modest farm with 1 sow, 4 pigs that are around 35kg each and 25 egg-laying-chickens.
In January 2016 she received her first loan and constructed a double vault latrine. The standard latrine helped her family enhance their living environment and reduced the risk of intestinal diseases.
Previously Mrs Khuyen grew rice paddy and raised cow for their main monthly income. Two years ago, she realised that raising pigs was easy and she could generate an income faster, so she switched from raising cow to raising pigs. She also has 25 laying chicken to bring in an extra income.
The demand of pork and pork products are raising so Mrs. Khuyen is requesting a loan to take advantage of this opportunity by increasing the size of her pig farm. She will invest the loan money to buy 15 more pigs and 12 bags of pig feed. This investment will lead to a higher monthly income and a better chance to support her son’s economic condition. She will pay back the loan in 12 monthly instalments.
