Reynaldo Cuaderno is 49 years old and has fice children aged 9, 15, 22, 26 and 27. His 48 year old wife, Agripina, works in a government agency. The family lives in Nueva Ecija province. For the past 20 years, Reynaldo has been growing rice on a hectare of land. He has three full-time workers who assist him in his business. In addition, Reynaldo also owns a grocery store selling various kinds of items on a retail basis. His wife assists him in this business. Reynaldo is an active member of the microfinance organisation Alalay sa Kaunlaran and is requesting a loan of $1583 (60,000 Philippine pesos) to purchase additional fertiliser and more stock for his store. He has promised to repay this over a five month period.
