Kreng Soy is 42 years old and married with three children, who are aged between 20 and 13 years old. His youngest child is still at school. Kreng and his family live in Battambang province. Kreng has produced wet season rice for the past 20 years and currently he has around 3.5 hectares of land. He produces between 2 to 4 tonnes per hectare. However, Kreng and his wife also have another plot of land on which they grow vegetables such as cucumbers, yard long beans and bitter melon. They can make around $25 a day selling these vegetables at the local market. Kreng is also a carpenter that he can earn around $7 a day from this activity. There is regular income from his carpenter skills.To improve their living conditions while their working capital is limited, they have asked for an eighteen month loan in order to build a new house. The size of their new home will be 6 metres x 11.5 metres and they need to buy materials such as zinc, cement, sand, nails, paint and wood as well as pay for another carpenter to carry out some of the work.
