Héctor Iñiguez is a smalholder farmer from near the small town of Malacatos in the province of Loja in southern Ecuador. He is married to Mariana Delgado who as well as taking responsibility for household chores, raises poultry. They have 12 children, four sons and eight daughters, only three are below the age of 18. Don Héctor grows short-cycle crops such as maize and beans. He also rears pigs, livestock and also sells cheese in the parish of Yangana. He owns the land where he grows and raises his animals. It is under irrigation allowing him grow his products throughout the year. Don Héctor started farming around 30 years ago on rented land. At present he has around one and a half hectares and four pigs and eight cows. He sells his harvest at Las Pitas market in the city of Loja. With the sale of the products, Don Héctor has been able to save and build his own house, buy his land, and to cover the household's expenses. Don Hector earns almost $800 per month on average from farming. He requested a loan to buy beans and maize seeds, organic fertiliser, two pigs and to pay two labourers to help him plough and plant the land.
