Michelle Fajardo is 27 years old and married with two children who are aged 3 years old and 6 months old. Michelle’s husband, Ace, is 27 years old and helps in running their business. Through her earnings from being a call centre agent, Michelle has been able to establish an internet cafe that is now her source of income which supports her family’s daily needs. Her internet café is located in an area adjacent to their residence which is in Sta. Cruz which is in the town of Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija province. Michelle’s cafe currently has more than ten desktop computers, which she lets customers rent on an hourly basis. Michelle usually charges 15 to 20 Philippine pesos per hour. Most of her customers are students who normally need to access the internet in order to research or prepare for school projects. Because of her affordable rates these students have more opportunities to learn and complete their school work. Some people also visit her shop to contact loved ones working abroad. Michelle also has regular customers who frequently browse the internet to access various social networking sites as well as those who want to do their shopping online. Her husband assists her in the café especially when there are a lot of customers. This has been her business for almost two years now. Michelle has received a new microloan worth $394 from the microfinance organisation, Alalay sa Kaunlaran. She intends to use it for the regular maintenance of her desktop computers. She also wants to purchase a few more computers so she can cater to her customers’ needs. She plans to save her income to support the future educational needs of her children. The loan will be repaid over a term of six months. She dreams of opening another branch of internet café in the nearby village someday.
