Loan description:
Mrs. Sarin is 49 years old. She has 3 children aged between 8 and 18 years old. Only the youngest is at school. She and her husband farm maize on around 2 hectares of land. By growing maize they can grow crops twice a year. In a period of around 90 days they can pick maize crops of around five tons per hectare to sell on. The middleman generally buys the crops from their farm after they have been harvested. They also hire 5 villagers to assist them picking the crops. Each of them earns around $5 a day from their working activity. To farm their maize as in previous years then they have requested this 36 month loan in order to purchase good quality seeds, pesticide, weed killer, to pay for the ploughing costs (one hectare costs $50) and cover the labouring costs of their five employees. They will also use this loan to buy a cow to feed up and sell on, and a motorbike for commuting.
