Roberto Tagudin is 49 years old and lives in the neighbourhood of San Isidro which is in the town of Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija province. He is married to Remedios, who is 49 years old and a market vendor. They have four children who are aged 20, 18, 15 and 12. Their eldest child has already graduated from college while his other three children are still studying. Roberto is also engaged in selling fruit and vegetables, but he uses a ‘rolling stall’ and he travels to different parts of the town to sell his goods. He sells tomatoes, onions, garlic and bananas which are commonly used by households in the Philippines. He wants to give the utmost convenience to people and prevent them from incurring too much cost in transportation by bringing his fruit and vegetables to them. Roberto also maintains stocks of condiments and seasonings. He makes this kind of business possible through the use of his motorcycle to which he has attached a customised cart. The rolling stall also has a metal roof in order to protect his produce from harsh sunlight or heavy rainfall. He shoulders the cost of buying fuel for his daily activities as well as the regular maintenance of the motorcycle. This has been a vital source of income for his family for the past nine years. Roberto is a member of the microfinance organisation, Alalay sa Kaunlaran, and has received a $488 loan. He plans to use this loan to purchase larger stocks of fruit and vegetables. This loan will also help him maintaining the good condition of his motorcycle. He also wants to open a second business venture if given the chance. He shall use a significant part of his income to support the college education of his children. The loan is repayable over eighteen months.
