Cristian Ramírez is a small-scale farmer from an area called Trapichillo which is near the small town of Catamayo in southern Ecuador. Don Cristian is married with two young daughters, the eldest has recently started school. When he started farming independently he only cultivated a few hundred square metres for fear of failure. However, he now farms around two hetares. These are planted with maize and beans and are sold directly at the farmers' markets in Catamayo. Don Cristian requested a loan in order to purchase fertiliser which will be applied to the growing plants in order to ensure the best harvest in a few weeks time. He will also pay one labourer to help him applying the fertiliser and also with the subsequent harvest. Any funds remaining will be put towards the cost of hiring machinery to plough the land ready for the next sowing.
