Loan description:
Mrs. Sophal is 54 years old and has three children, aged between 24 and 35. She farms dry season rice on a two hectare farm. This type of rice lends itself it to a biannual harvest, and her present yield is three tons per hectare per harvest. She also rents a further five hectares of land from another villager at a rental of around $50 per hectare per annum. The harvested crops are sold directly to a local middleman. She hires 10 villagers to collect the crops and each of them could earn $5 a day from this work. She has taken a loan out to purchase good quality seeds, pesticide, weed killer, as well as to cover ploughing costs at $50 per hectare, the rental costs of the additional five hectares and associated labour costs. A part of the loan will be used to purchase a motorbike for commuting. She aims to pay the loan back within 24 months.
