María Ramos is from the neighbourhood of El Valle in the city of Loja which is the capital of the province of the same name in southern Ecuador. She is 49 years old and married with two children who are both studying at college. Some time ago her husband was involved in recycling scrap materials and this affected his health. He decided to start a small business instead selling crafts. Observing its success Doña María thought it would be a good idea to open a stall in the market selling kitchen and other household utensils such as plastic containers, buckets and baskets. Her business has also been successful and she has had the stall now for 18 years. She sought a loan in order to buy new stock. The loan is for eight months.
