Cruz is 53 years old and married with nine children. She lives with her husband in the rural community of San Pedro de la Bendita, near the town of Catamayo in southern Ecuado. Her husband works in agriculture. Cruz worked as a saleswoman for 18 years in a company. With her severance pay and some savings when she left her job she decided to open a small shop. With help from the microfinance institution Fundacion FACES she has taken several loans and slowly built up her shop. She has sought another loan for the same purpose - buying extra stock. The loan is for six months. She wants to eventually buy a freezer so that she can sell ice creams.
