Cambodia
Loan description:
Ky Horn is 48 years old and married with four children. They are 25, 23, 19 and 18 respectively. The elder two are already married and live separately. Ky lives in the village of Bakrotes in Ek Phnom district in Battambang province in north west Cambodia. Ky has been a member of the Ek Phnom Credit Union for the past three years. Ky and her husband, Khan Noeurm, who is 42 years old, are farmers with over 20 years experience. They own two hectares of rice paddy which gives them an excellent yield of about four tonnes per hectare. After harvesting the rice they plant green beans on the same land. They keep about 500 kilograms of rice for their own consumption and sell the remainder to merchants who visit their farm and take delivery. To ensure that they have a good rice yield, Ky has sought a loan in order to buy seeds, insecticide, weed killer, pay for ploughing costs and buy a water pump. Ky intends to repay the loan over five months. Ky also aims to diversify her income and raise pigs next year (The photographs show Ky’s husband).
