Ecuador
Karina Jamileth is 23 and comes from Carchi province, which is in the north of Ecuador. From a young age, Karina watched her parents as they worked in the fields and how they harvested the crops. Over the years, she continued learning and helping her parents to prepare the soil and sow seeds on the farmland.
Karina has been working on her own crops for the past two years and with the help of her parents she has sown her own plants and collected her own harvest. In this way, she has been able to improve her work on her farm every day. Currently, she grows onions on her farmland of one hectare. She employs ten people who fertilise the crops and collect the harvest.
Every year, she harvests 480 sacks of onions which are sold to market traders in the city. Karina also works for a financial organisation, contributing an extra income to support her household income.
She has now requested a loan and plans to use 67% of it to buy fertilisers, supplies and to pay the wages of contract labourers to work on the land. This investment will assist her to fertilise her crops at the right time to get healthy crops.
She also plans to use the remaining 33% of the loan to buy a refrigerator, which she needs in her house for storing and keeping her food healthy.
