Marcelline is a red palm oil producer. She was very talkative when we met her and she told us a lot about her business and her life. Her business is growing well, for example, she used to produce 150 litres of red palm oil a week and now she manages to produce up to 1000 or 1200 litres a week. However to achieve this she works from 4 in the morning to 6 in the evening. She only rests on Sunday. She employs 6 people temporarily, all relatives. The main challenge she faces is lack of quality equipment. She would like to have a big loan to buy a presser. She has taken 4 loans and she has used them all to buy inputs. Having access to loans has improved the quality of her life because she now doesn't worry much about generating enough income to cover her family’s basic needs; she also has opened a savings account recently. Marcelline has now 3 dependants and lives with a daughter in law. She also has 6 grandchildren and sometimes she pays for some of their school's expenses. Her biggest ambition is to have a presser that would make her work a lot easier. Her net profits have increased from 30,000 to 35,000 (£38 to £45) FCFA.
