José Andrés Imaicela Sarango is a carpenter from the town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. He received a loan of around £1,100 a couple of months ago and has recently started making repayments. He bought 240 planks each of which cost $5 as well as nails, glue, and screws - he received a discount through buying in bulk. He also paid for labour that he needed to help him finish pending orders. Mostly, he makes household furniture such as cupboards, wardrobes, and all types of beds. He always works according to specific orders he receives and makes made to measure items. It takes him around one week to finish an item, three days if he contracts labour to assist. Now once he has funds he intends to purchase a new plane. On average his monthly profit is around $400, but it depends of course on how many jobs he receives, it was more last month as he completed the jobs. Don Jose has other sources of income as well - he also farms and makes and sells bricks. In the future he would like his carpentry workshop to grow but he needs to invest in more equipment.
