Aurelio Martín Bustamante Lima has a tailoring business in the town of Catamayo in southern Ecuador. He received a loan at the end of 2012 and has started making the first repayments. He specialises in making sportswear (including football shirts, shorts and tracksuit bottoms) and has a successful family business which he runs with his wife and two daughters. Don Aurelio learned the trade from his father and he is happy to pass on the profession to his daughters. A total of seven people live in the household. When he received the loan he used it to buy supplies of threads, fabrics, and elastic in bulk. However, he decided to also purchase a new industrial sewing machine as well. Quite a few orders were placed in recent months including one from a primary school and he felt they needed more machines to complete the pending orders. He had planned to make some physical adjustments to the premises but postponed these for another time. It is a busy season as many institutions hold their sporting tournaments and request complete team uniforms. On average the business is earning a profit of between US$1,300 and US$1,500 each month which needs to be shared out between the family. Once he repays this loan he hopes to take out another to buy an industrial sewing machine which does embroidery. This is quite expensive though at almost US$5,000.
