We visited Carmen Castillo on Wednesday 22 August 2012 at her internet shop in the district of Maria Auxiliadora in the town of Catamayo in southern Ecuador. Carmen received a loan several months ago and has just made the repayment for the month for August. She used the loan to buy another computer - she now has four computers which she allows customers to use for 80 cents per hour - she actually allows them to pay just for the exact number of minutes they use, for example 40 cents for half an hour. She also has a colour printer and a photocopying machine which customers can use. She charges 10 cents per page printed. She would like to buy another computer because customers often have to wait until a computer becomes available. Customers tend to be students doing research for school and college - the younger students are accompanied by their parents - and people wanting to access their email accounts. Carmen has a block on computers accessing certain websites because of the age of many of her customers. Carmen earns between US$10-25 per day - the busiest time is early evenings and the busiest day is Sunday. She is open from 10 am to 10 pm seven days a week. The only significant cost is the monthly rental for the internet service and she has a very reliable broadband service. She does not pay rent for the premises because her father owns the building and she lives with her partner (who is a bricklayer) and her three children (aged 13, 9 and 4) above the shop. The advantage she has is that there are no other internet shops nearby - the nearest alternative is the town centre which is some blocks away. When her partner returns from work she attends to other tasks such as cooking while he looks after the shop. Carmen considers this a good business because she has a good income and can work from home - she used to work as a radio controller for a taxi firm and sold cosmetics after that, both jobs were more tiring.
