Update on Sok Hoem

Update on Sok Hoem

Sok Hoem received a loan earlier this year. He used the funds to buy various inputs to plant and grow his dry season rice. He farms three hectares of rice paddy. He had an excellent yield of around four tonnes of rice per hectare. He kept some of the rice for his own household's consumption and sold the remainder to local merchants. He received the equivalent of US$250 per tonne. Of this, he saved around US$625 for family expenses and intends to use the remaining profit for the costs associated with the next crop of rice for which he will have to wait three months before he can harvest. The advantage that he has is that he has access to irrigation and can harvest up to three times a year, whereas most other farmers can only plant and harvest twice. He has plans to more than double the land he has under cultivation to eight hectares by renting more land. He is frequently in the rice fields checking his rice is growing well and not affected by insects and other diseases.
