We visited Armina Salkic on the 16 April 2012 at her home in Potocari, near the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia. She invested her loan in buying chickens and chicken feed. She buys chicks, rears them for about three months and then sells them on for their meat. She can earn around 6 KM (about £2.30) per kilogram. She raises around 30 chickens at any one time. It is profitable and there are no real risks once she vaccinates the chicks against disease and protects them from the severe cold during the winter months. She sells the chickens in the capital Sarajevo because the price is higher – she receives assistance from her mother and sister-in-law who both live there. This is her second loan from the microfinance organisation Women for Women International and she has made the first couple of repayments without any difficulties.
