Serey Chhieng and his wife Tan Ton run a small general store in Kouk Doung village in Ek Phnom district in Battambang province. They have five children aged between 3 and 16. The elder three attend school locally. They have had the store for about six years. Once a week Serey also travels to Toul Ta Ek market on his motor cart to sell groceries. Serey sells variety of general groceries such as shampoo, cooking oil, salt, canned foods and sugar. Serey wants to increase the quantity of stock that he holds and has therefore sought a loan to buy new items including shampoo, noodles, white sugar and washing powder. Serey intends to repay the loan over four months. Serey has plans to diversify his business to also sell clothes.
