Jocelyn Calbay is 37 years old and has four children aged 10, 12, 13 and 16. Her 40 year old husband, Ricardo, is a tricycle driver. The family lives in Bulacan province. For the past 15 years, Jocelyn has operated a ‘carinderia’(small eatery) in the public market. She prepares 10 different kinds of dishes and also sells refreshments and cold drinks. Jocelyn has three full-time staff who assist her. She has been a member of the microfinance organisation Alalay sa Kaunlaran for more than one year and is requesting a loan of $656 (25,000 Philippine pesos) to purchase larger amounts of ingredients for her food business and has promised to repay this over a six month period.
