Sokhoeurm Khon is 29 years old and a rice farmer, along with her husband, in Battambang province. Sokhoeurm and her husband grow rice on six hectares of land. They are only able to produce wet season rice since they do not have access to an irrigation system and they produce two and a half tonnes of wet season rice per hectare. However, after they harvest their rice crops they also grow sesame on the same piece of land. It takes about three months to cultivate sesame and once it is ready to be harvested, they sell it all to a local merchant. They produce around 300 kilograms of sesame per hectare. To ensure they have a healthy working capital they have decided to apply for an eighteen month loan in order to cover the costs of purchasing diesel for their tractor, insecticide, weed killer, seeds and fertilizer. They will also use this loan to pay for harvesting costs.
