Ecuador
Loan description:
José González is a farmer from near the town of Malacatos in southern Ecuador. He is 38 and married with two daughters both of whom attend school. Don José grows seasonal crops such as maize, beans, cassava and tomatoes. Don Jose has been involved in farming for many years, initially helping his parents on their farm when he was a boy. Together with his wife he rises early to check on the plants, weed, provide water if necessary and check for any diseases. It is the best time to work as after midday the sun is too strong, particularly because they live at altitude. He requested a loan in order to buy compost in bulk but also because he needs to buy insecticide and fungicide as his crops have been affected by the proliferation of diseases following a wet winter and he is at risk of losing a substantial part of his harvest. Don Jose sells the crops himself at the farmer's markets in the town of Malacatos which are held on Saturdays. He intends to repay the loan over 12 months.
