Loan description:
Roeurt Chhen is 47 years old and married to Mrs. Voeurng, who is shown in the picture. Currently they farm wet season rice on around five hectares of land. The yield from this wet season rice is around two tonnes per hectare and it takes about six months to cultivate before it is ready to be harvested and sold. However, they also have another one and a half hectares of land on which they produce dry season rice. To create a sustainable income from their rice farming they have decided to take out an eighteen month loan in order to cover their farming costs, enabling them to produce on more of their land more successfully. These costs include purchasing good quality rice seeds, diesel for their water pump, insecticide, weed killer and fertiliser as well as the cost of hiring additional labour and ploughing their land. They want to be able to irrigate their land more adequately in the future so they can produce more dry season rice, which is quicker and easier to cultivate. They believe this will help increase their income and enable them to support their family more adequately.
