Loan description:
Yaran Chhay is 28 years old and married to Mrs. Mom, who is shown in the photograph. Yaran and Mom produce rice on around one hectare of land, with yields of approximately two tonnes. They are only able to grow rice on their land during the wet season, which requires a greater length of time to cultivate, around six months, so they need to find other ways to supplement their income. When they are not farming they work along the Cambodian-Thai border picking maize and chopping cassava for other farmers. They can earn around $10 a day doing this. Yaran and Mom in addition to this want to start a business serving coffee and noodles to people in their village. They have applied for a twelve month loan in order to purchase soil to refill the land at the front of their home (in Cambodia most houses are built on stilts in a low-lying piece of land) so that it is at street level and they can set-up their coffee and noodle store there.
