Ecuador
Loan description:
Silvia Cabrera is from the 'barrio' of Borja just outside the provincial capital of Loja in southern Ecuador. She is 47 and married with two children. Her husband is a driver. When she married at the age of 21 Doña Silvia's father gifted her a plot of land where she and her husband built a wooden house to live in. When her husband started working as a driver after about three years of marriage they reconstructed their home from blocks. After her second child was born, Silvia started making a living from raising hens and selling their eggs. Her daughter is employed as a seamstress, while her son is still in secondary education. Over the years, and with three people earning, they have managed to add a few rooms to their house. Doña Silvia requested a loan in order to buy more chicks and feed for the birds for several months. She wants to expand her business - there is a strong demand both for free range eggs (they can sell for 25 cents each) and chicken meat. Additionally, she will use part of the loan to help her daughter establish her small tailor's workshop by buying the necessary equipment and supplies. Her fervent hope is that her son manages to obtain a professional job one day.
