Mey Merciales is a 29 year old woman. She is single and lives together with her parents and other close relatives. Mey manages provides a supplementary income for her family through a small grocery shop that she has been operating for almost three years. The shop is in Aurora province and offers consumable items such as powdered drinks, seasonings, condiments, shampoos, toothpaste and biscuits. Her store is relatively small but Mey always ensures that important items are always available. She works full time in maintaining the good operations of the shop. Mey maintains a record to monitor the financial status of her business. She is an active member of the microfinance organisation, Alalay sa Kaunlarang, where she already completed a number of loan requests. She has availed a larger loan this time worth $919 (35,000 Philippine pesos) for the purposes of increasing the number of products she offers every day and adding items such as canned goods, snacks and sodas. Mey’s income is intended for the continuous growth of her business until it has become a fully-grown convenience shop someday.
