María Germania Cañar Sánchez is 41 and divorced with an 18 year old son. Doña María lives in the neighbourhood of 'El Dorado' in the town of Cariamanga. She migrated to Spain some years ago but returned to set up a small shop when the economic situation worsened there and also because she wanted to spend more time with her son. She sells mainly food such as rice, sugar, bread, milk and canned foods as well as general household cleaning and personal hygiene items. Customers tend to be from the local 'barrios' and she is open long hours. The shop is successful and it generates enough to provide a decent standard of living for Maria and her son. She requested a loan to buy new stock for the shop - she will focus on non-perishable items that offer a large discount when buying in bulk. The loan is for 13 months.
