Cambodia
Loan description:
Van Kim is 41 years old and married Mrs. Chhoeurt, showed in the photograph. They are farmers and grow rice in 4 hectares of rice that yield 2 tons per hectare. They produce wet season rice. However, they also farm dry season rice on one hectare and they get the crops ready for sale in a period of 3 months. They sell this to merchants who visit them at their farm. They rent a tractor when they need to plough their land, and this costs $30 per hectare. After harvesting the rice, they work as farm labourers harvesting maize by hand on larger farms located along the Cambodia-Thai border. They can earn about $10 a day. To ensure that they have a good rice yield, they have applied for a loan to buy seeds, commercial fertiliser, insecticide, weed killer and pay for ploughing and harvesting costs.
