Piedad Gonzalez requested a loan in order to buy a new industrial sewing machine. She is 42 and married with four children. The eldest is in the police force, the next is at university while the younger two are still in school. Piedad is a seamstress and has had her business for the last 25 years. Piedad mainly makes women's clothes and offers a repair and alteration service as well. She qualified after following a course at the artisan vocational centre. When she married she opened her own business and the income she has earned has been invaluable in meeting household expenditures and particularly enabling her children to continue in full-time education. Her husband has a truck which he uses to transport goods throughout the province but particularly around the town of Catamayo. The new sewing machine has more features and enables her to offer a better service to customers.
