Ofelia Ragadio is a 40 year old wife and has a 13 year old boy. They live in Nueva Ecija province. Her 42 year old husband, Lenard, works overseas. Ofelia manages a farming business near their home growing rice. A few workers assist her during the planting and harvesting seasons.She has been a member of the microfinance organisation Alalay sa Kaunlaran for 11 years and has already completed eight loan cycles. She is now requesting a new loan of $656 (25,000 Philippine pesos) to purchase additional ‘‘pataba’ fertiliser for her crops and has promised to repay this over a five month period.
